About

Halitosis (Bad Breath) Treatment

Most chronic halitosis comes from bacteria living on the back of the tongue, between the teeth, or in untreated gum pockets. We track down the source at your visit and treat it directly — no guesswork, no marketing-rinse upsells.

We start with a comprehensive exam to rule out tooth decay, gum disease, an old failing filling, or a sinus or tonsil source. A tongue scrape and a periodontal probing chart usually reveal where the smell is coming from.

Treatment is targeted: a thorough cleaning to clear plaque and tartar, a tongue-hygiene plan, restorative work on any failing filling or crown, and periodontal therapy if pockets are involved. A short course of medicated rinse may be added for stubborn cases.

Most patients see a dramatic improvement within two weeks. Re-care visits at 3 to 6 months keep the result.

Halitosis (Bad Breath) Treatment · FAQ

Common questions about halitosis (bad breath) treatment at Stadium Dental in Edmonton.

  1. Most over-the-counter rinses mask the smell for an hour. They don't address the bacteria living in the periodontal pockets and on the back of the tongue, which is where most halitosis originates.

  2. Yes — sinus infections, tonsil stones, acid reflux, and certain medications can all contribute. If a complete dental work-up doesn't resolve it, we refer to your family physician or an ENT.
